Tax Refund Estimator
A quick projection of your 2026 federal refund or balance due. Combine W-2 wages, self-employment income, withholding, deductions, and credits to see where you'll land at tax time.
Quick answer: Your refund equals total payments (withholding + estimated taxes) minus total tax owed; a positive number is a refund, a negative one is a balance due.
How it works
1. Total what you already paid in
Add up federal income tax withheld from your paychecks (Box 2 of your W-2) plus any estimated payments you made during the year. This total is what you have prepaid toward your tax bill. Refunds and balances due both come from comparing this number to your actual liability.
2. Estimate your actual tax liability
Calculate taxable income after deductions, apply the 2026 brackets, then subtract credits like the Child Tax Credit or education credits. Credits reduce tax dollar-for-dollar and can swing the result significantly. The figure that remains is your true liability for the year.
3. Compare to get refund or balance due
If you prepaid more than your liability, the difference is your refund; if you prepaid less, you owe the balance. A large refund means you over-withheld and gave the government an interest-free loan — adjusting your W-4 can put that money in each paycheck instead. Treat the estimate as a planning tool.
Frequently asked questions
How is my refund calculated?
Refund = total payments (withholding + estimated payments) minus total tax (income tax + self-employment tax minus credits). A positive number is a refund; a negative number is a balance due.
Why do I owe even though I had withholding?
Self-employment income usually has no withholding, so the income tax and 15.3% SE tax on it come due at filing. If your W-2 withholding didn't cover that, you owe the difference.
Is this an exact tax return?
No — it's a planning estimate using 2026 projected brackets and the standard deduction. It doesn't model every credit or state tax. Use it to gauge whether to adjust withholding or make an estimated payment.
