How it works
1. Total the wall and ceiling area
Measure the square footage of every wall and ceiling you plan to cover. Add them together for the total area to drywall. Do not subtract small openings; only subtract large ones like garage doors or wide window walls.
2. Divide by sheet size
A standard 4-by-8 drywall sheet covers 32 square feet, while a 4-by-12 sheet covers 48. Divide your total area by the sheet size you plan to use to get the base sheet count. Larger sheets mean fewer seams to tape but are heavier to handle.
3. Add waste and finishing materials
Add about 10% for cuts and breakage, then round up to whole sheets. Plan finishing materials too: roughly one roll of joint tape and a bucket of compound per 10 to 12 sheets, plus screws. The calculator estimates sheets and waste so your order is complete.
